First one of the year

I'm trying to make it but leave it to work to schedule a mandatory "fun-tivity" on the same day as CM. Need a good excuse to bail out so post any ideas in the comments...

www.burrobags.com

If you don't know of burro bags by now, maybe you should. Great friends/lovers/riders/seemsterz that specialize in making custom bags/pedal straps as well as any ideas you might have(made my old roommate's dog a bomb proof collar). Things are rapidly picking up in this cycling community and lots of cool projects are underway with our very own jacksonville based company. Drop Matt or Chris a line and tell them what you need.

Hey Folks!

Hi everyone my name is Preston and i am one of the newest contributors to 407FIXED. Im not the greatest writer in the world but i am stoked to bring you some neat content in the next cpl months. You can find me @ the world famous BBQ BAR slinging your favorite drinks and cheap sauce or riding around our beautiful city. Things are getting pretty rad here in O-town as of late and i thought i would throw up an old burst video of Critical Mass filmed by a talented buddy of mine Chase Heavener. He is a badass capturer of righteous footy. Enjoy!

Mid-West Mayhem

If you haven't heard of this contest you probably don't have an internet connection. Over the weekend, Cream City Skatepark in Milwaukee hosted the biggest fixed gear freestyle comp in the US to date. All the "internet famous" riders were there shredding properly and pushing the limits of our sport. Here are the results by BikeJerks and an edit by Seth Root. Be sure to congratulate former Orlando ripper Mike Schmitt for his (tied for) bronze. (I know this stuff will be all over the big blogs but I just couldn't help myself.)

1st Tom LaMarche
2nd Wonka
3rd Taylor & Mike Schmitt tied
5th Eric Pucket
6th Zach
7th Torey Thornton
8th Antonio
9th Prolly
10th Robert & Kris tied
11th A.J. Austin
12th Sean Milnes
13th Mike T

Wonka's transfer to wall ride is f'ing incredible.

new year, new toys, new footage.

Last night i picked up a FLIP minoHD camera that just came out. it shoots widescreen and i modded it to add a sunpak .50x wide angle to it. So if you know how to get in touch with me, do it... i cant wait to start putting together edits finally. look forward to a lot of awesome shit coming from the 407fixed crew. mad ups.

Weekend Update

Last night was a blast, quite a few people made it out to Howard for some trick ridding. Everyone had a great time and we made some new friends. I popped off a few photos on my 35mm camera so keep an eye out for those. I'm still waiting on the processing. Eventually we got kicked out and a few of us headed up to a low-key spot and built up a little ghetto quarter. We whipped out the digital and got a few more shots off. Anyway enjoy some instant gratification and J.J. going off.

More shots here

P.S. Polo will be going off again this Sunday at 5pm at Howard again. If you're looking to hang out, practice some tricks, or kick it playing some polo make it out.

An edit from ex 407 ripper / RVA transplant Mike Schmitt showing off some of Richmonds dope spots. Worth the view just for the song alone!

BTW, we are resuming taping in February as Antimo and I are starting to work on a small video project showcasing 407 riders. Dust off your tricks and get ready to bring your "A" game. No excuses this time!

The Orlando Weekly's cover story this week is an interview with Mighk Wilson, the bicycle and pedestrian coordinator for MetroPlan Orlando. Amongst other information he advises on the safest way to ride on city roads, touches on some interisting statistics, and offers insight to future city planning. Although you may not agree with everything he says, the interview is worth reading for all local cyclists using public roads.

some more changes

As you can see a few more contributors have jumped on board! In addition to Antimo, I also want to welcome in to the fray Preston aka Diddles. Most of you know Preston as a drinkslinger at BBQ Bar but he's also good for a Keo spin or two...

Bike Polo in Orlando

Just wanted to let everyone know that a few peeps are trying to get polo popping off again on a regular basis. This Sunday at 5pm a few folks will be meeting at Howard Middle School on Robinson to play some pickup games. There should be a few community mallets to use but it might be a good idea to bring your own. Check out this link for instructions on making your very own mallet. And don't be afraid to come out because you have never played before! A lot of people in Orlando (myself included) don't have much experience playing. So come on out! It's gonna be a lot of fun. Check out this site for rules, pics, videos, and just about everything you need to know about bike polo.

Saying Hello

I'd like to introduce myself. Many of you know me already know me, but for those who don't I'm antimo. If your living in the Orlando area I'm sure we'll meet at some point, this community is so tightly knit.

I've been given a great opportunity by TBM to pick up where a few of the main contributors have become over stretched. We've seen quite a few great videos and events come out of 407fixed and I hope to continue that tradition. I look forward to helping showcase what is happening here in Orlando.

Hello,
Antimo

Doctor sentenced to 5 years in prison for assaulting bicyclists

For those of you who were following this case...
A doctor convicted of assaulting two bicyclists by slamming on his car brakes after a confrontation on a narrow Brentwood road was sentenced today to five years in prison. Christopher Thompson, wearing dark blue jail scrubs, wept as he apologized to the injured cyclists shortly before he was sentenced. "I would like to apologize deeply, profoundly from the bottom of my heart," he told them, his right hand cuffed to a court chair.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Scott T. Millington called the case a "wake-up call" to motorists and cyclists and urged local government to provide riders with more bike lanes. He said he believed that Thompson had shown a lack of remorse during the case and that the victims were particularly vulnerable while riding their bicycles. The case against Thompson, 60, has drawn close scrutiny from bicycle riders around the country, many of whom viewed the outcome as a test of the justice system's commitment to protecting cyclists.

Dont agree with the judges call for more bike lanes but at least these guys got their day in court. Tip of the hast to hugs for the heads up...

some changes....

As promised 2010 is bringing some big changes to 407fixedgear; one of the biggest is that I am stepping down as it's main contributor. I will continue to help out in various ways as well continue to work on bike videos but as far as the day to day blog business goes, Blackshaw is the man in charge. Currently I'm being pulled in various directions with the projects I'm involved with which has created a bit of a time crunch. Because of the time constraints, postings have slowed down and its become a bit harder for people to contact me about things. In light of this, I would rather pass on the baton to someone who can be more accessible and have the time to run this as opposed to closing the whole thing down. That person is Blackshaw aka Mr Ace Metric...

Those of you following 407fixedgear from the beginning remember how this blog first came about. Back in 2007 things were just starting to take off here in town and the emerging scene was in need of a place people could check to see what kind of races / bike events were happening in the area. I started the blog in Sept of 2007 in order to fill this need and as a way to help foster the community aspect that later evolved. Blackshaw and Hugs were the first two contributors to jump on board and were instrumental in how this project developed. Over the next 2 years, this little experiment took off in a big way and our audience grew from being a local one to that of a worldwide audience. With the help of several people and their positive attitudes, we helped put Orlando on the map and in some ways set the bar on how bike races / events are done in the state. I'm happy I was able to be a part of this...

I want to thank all of you for supporting the blog and its events in the past. The scene here was at one point one of the best anywhere and while things are in a weird place now, there's no reason why it cant continue to evolve and grow in to something different. But its not going to happen with people sitting around, complaining and talking shit about each other. A community is built on respect and lately, that respect has been missing in so many ways. This is not directed at all of you as the majority of you are stand up folks but if the shoe fits, wear it. To those of you who continue to rep the 407 hard, be safe and I'll see you on the streets!

respect,
tbm aka el gato pescado
