Film: Six-Day Bicycle Race

Quoted from the website:

The Film

The Glamour Sport of the 1910’s, 20’s, and 30’s — The Six-Day
Bicycle Race
The riders were some of the best paid and most respected athletes during the golden era of sports…the Jazz Age. It was a seen and be seen event every year in all the major metropolitan areas of the United States and Canada. Movie stars, politicians, and gangsters mixed with everyday sports fans to create an atmosphere not found in any other sport.

Jazz bands and song pluggers performed in the infield as the bookies plied their trade. The finest sports writers of the day, such as Grantland Rice and Damon Runyon, spun tales of heroes and villains. The riders raced for big money and big endorsements.

Every major city in North America had its own “Race to Nowhere” each winter, when the college football season was over (pro football was strictly small time) and the baseball season had yet to start.

This film traces the history of this completely forgotten sport from its early days in the 1880’s through its sad demise in the 1950’s. Over 40 hours of interviews with riders, supporters, family members and historians bring life to the rich tapestry which was the Six-Day Bicycle Race.

Narrated by award winning author and television sports journalist Frank Deford, this film brings to life the color and excitement of an era when a bike rider could make in six days what his father might earn in six years.

More than 10 years in the making, the Six-Day Bicycle Race is a film that brings together the largest known collection of photographs, archival footage and personal recollections by and of people long since passed away.

The producers of this film hope you will come to love the characters and the institution of the Six-Day Bicycle Race as much as we have.

Critical Mass 2-27-09

Same time, same place...

BTW for those of you that fancy yourselves a Cliche Gueverra and view this ride as a confrontation of sorts, chew on this little nugget from the critical-mass.info site:
CM is intended to be a celebration, not an opportunity to cause trouble. Those who want to try to tie up traffic as much as possible and be confrontational with motorists are missing the point. We can assert our right to the road without being rude about it. Focus on the ride, not on the cars that also happen to be on the road.

and in case you forgot:

have fun! :)

Broken chain blues...

Turns out Robert had a bit of a tumble last night during the hustle. From what Julius told me, his chain broke while they where hauling ass down Orange ave last night which in turn caused Robert to flip over the bars of his bike. From what I hear he's ok and all the bike needs is a new chain. This picture was taken while they where waiting for Roberts girl to swoop by and pick him up...

Be careful out there!

Gear up for Education Bicycle Parade

One of our readers Cole forwarded to me this info on an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the Largest Bicycle Parade. It's meant to raise awareness regarding the serious budget crunch the states schools are suffering at the moment. It's scheduled for Saturday March 14th, 2009 with registration starting at 7:30am and the parade starting at 8am. I know that's mad early for some of you guys but what the hell, it's for a good cause! :)

Updated info on the Trick Comp / Sprint Race this Saturday...

Trcik Comp Meet up is at 1pm at the 7-11 on Summerlin and Washington. Ride there and do not park in their lot, the hook (aka tow truck) will yank your car. We take off to the spot at 1:30pm, if your running late call Anthony at 407.595.1958. Anthony will be passing around a sign up sheet, you will need to list your name and the events you are to compete (30sec jam, track stand, keo(s),wheelies, skids, etc). The 30sec jam will be up first with all other events to follow in order. There will be donation box on site for beer monies for a party later that night. Anthony is working on having tube and tire sales on site and if anyone has a big ass boombox, please bring it.

After the comp will be games of Foot down, trackstand off and u-lock pick up so be sure to bring your lock. Sign up for the sprints will be at 3pm on the dot and they will be starting at 5pm sharp. Hood will be announcing the location of the first sprint location at the Trick comp...

Bring your "A" game for both events as I will be making a video of the footage I get and I believe shortformelissa will be taking some pictures too. Even if you are not going to enter, stop by and check out the hijinks. The more the merrier as these things feed off of audience participation...

Keep checking the IBOT thread for more developing info...

Edit 2.18.09
The registration spot for the sprints will be Pita pit in winter park, 140 W Fairbanks and not at the trick contest as previously stated...

Congrats and make sure you get back in one piece! :)

All City Clips

So I finally received my first order of these clips here at Ace Metric. I'm interested to see how they differ from the Soma Quad Gate- note the additional crossbar between the top and bottom sets of the strap gates. Other than the crossbar, they look identical to the Somas but come in more (anodized rather than powdercoated) colors. I'd imagine that they would be a bit stiffer and less prone to bend and twist laterally. I'm throwing a set on my bike as soon as I snap my current clips (the Somas).

Orange Cycle Annual Garage Sale

When: Saturday Feb. 7, 2009
Where: Parking Lot of Orange Cycle, 2204 Edgewater Dr. College Park
Time: 8am-12pm

I hear this is the 15th year in a row they do this little swap meet. This yearly event is held in the parking lot behind the shop and tends to attract everything from cyclists selling their used gear and equipment to manufacturer reps who are looking to unload any surplus/demo models they may have to bargain hunters looking for a good deal. The stuff for sale runs the gamut from brand new to vintage so it's definitely buyer beware. Last years event is where Kevin scored his vintage Gitane track frame for a really sweet price...

I missed last years event because we where all headed to St Augustine for the Hagamos Estos Alley Cat but I plan on hitting it for sure tomorrow. Anyone interested in riding out there with me, hit me up on the tbm hotline and we'll meet up before hand.

Just keep in mind my ass aint gonna be there at 8am...

Get yo tricks in shape s0n!

Listen up! Anthony is working on getting a local trick contest going on Saturday Feb 21st, 2009. There's no fee to enter and no prizes to give out, just a place to come out and hang out with others in to this type of riding. All you riders out there who have been getting busy as of late, here's your opportunity to show everyone what you've been up to...

So far the categories are looking like this:
Best track stand variations
Cleanest keo.
Most spins with a keo (360, 540, 720 etc)
Longest wheelie
Best skid.
Longest skid.
And all out 30sec do what you can run.

Meet up is at 2:30 pm at the 7/11 on Washington and Summerlin, at 2:45pm we head out from there to the spot. Chances are extremely good that I will be filming this for a 407fixedgear video short. All ready some good natured trash talking is going down, get in on it on the IBOT Thread...

Free Bike Tune Ups @ Audubon Park Community Market

IBOT user jscar is going to be offering free tune ups as part of the newly created Audubon Park Community Market. It's a local farmer's market that will be held in the Stardust parking lot every Wednesday from 4-9pm. If you are mechanically challenged and your bike is telling you it needs some love, stop by and get the kinks out of your ride and keep him company in the process...

Pedals Plus People

Shortformelissa has published her first book of pictures she took during the course of the 08 year. Lots of great pictures from races and events in Florida in a very slick presentation. She's got a few copies to sell locally but quantities are limited I'm told so don't sleep...

Hit her up via email at shortformelissa@gmail.com for more info regarding pricing on the copies she has or order one through directly through blurb. Make sure you spend the extra skrilla for the hardcover image wrap!

I blew out the candles then I just plain blew it!

Please forgive me!

To anyone that tried to come by the shop on either Sunday or Monday, I apologize. I had a full on birthday bender this past weekend and the days blended together into one long party. It's over with now and I'm back to the regular schedule. If you come in and tell me about how I inconvenienced you, I'll be sure to take good care of you.

Thanks!

PS: To anyone concerned that this blog has "sold out", please remember that I have been a contributor since the incarnation of www.407fixedgear.com. Ace Metric is very much a DIY operation. That said, the content I post from this point on will be less about direct shop advertisement and more about product reviews, news, events, etc. By the way, www.acemetric.com will be fully functional soon!
