I'm late to the party with this one but I had to post this here...
Look, I get just as pissed at the next guy with some of the shit that I deal with when I ride / commute to work but this IMO is the epitome of jackassery. It's one thing if your life is in danger but this was not the case here...
Thoughts?

I saw this on Prolly a few days ago. I've had many instances like this, but I never wanted to smash someone in the face with a u-lock. Dude should have smiled and just rode off. That pisses people off way more than beating then to death. Poor dude. Karma's a bitch that's all I have to say.
I would of hit him harder.
That was a bit excessive. Anyone know why they were even fighting to begin with?
From what I read they ran in to each other on the crosswalk, dunno who was at fault though. At this point the video picks up where the older guy appears to be confronting the cyclist and wont let it go. It's at this point that home boy now clocks him not once but four times with the Ulock...
Maybe its me but I save the Ulock for dire circumstances and this doesn't qualify as such. I've had much worse incidents than this that didn't devolve in to this kind of crap. Seriously, just punch the fukin dude if you must, there's no reason to put a hurting on him like this over words.
Again, a Ulock to the head over this? Really?! I have to echo the comments on prollys blog and call him a coward....
on monday i was threatened to be pushed of my bike and i stopped and i basically said hey man, thats not cool and he continued to be an asshole saying come back over here and ill show you type deal. so i stopped to try to calmly talk to this guy while his girlfriend is yelling at him for threatening me. i calmly said look man dont just jump out infront of a cyclist it may hurt you way more than it hurts me. but before i could finish this sentence he swung on me? i was already off my bike so i took my U-lock and hit him in the stomach then in the head. keep in ming this guy a lot biger than me and i dont like having a punch thrown at me. after i him him in the head he left me alone and i went home. all in all i think this case was stupid really? just beat the shit outta someone with yer U-lock cause hes probally saying something that you didnt like.

Difference in your situation Jeremy is he swung at you first. I personally think the ulock may have been a tad bit much but hey, the situation is hectic and you are bound to react with instinct. IMO, you where completely within your right to defend yourself...
I saw no similar aggression by the older guy in the video. Not to mention that 5 hits to the head is excessive; especially when he never even tried to hit the cyclist back. Shit at one point he stopped hitting him, sized him up and then hit him 3 more times. That's not self defense, thats just being a coward...
I was sucker punched about a month ago... I wanted to hit the dude with my lock... but i called the cops...

Just got back from a 3am ride. Some drunk assholes swerved on me down university so I blew him the finger. They stopped 50ft ahead and the passenger jumped out and started swinging as soon as I got close. Luckily his was piss drunk and couldn't fight.
I talked the dumbass down, because there were 4 of them. Had I had my Ulock on me I most likely would wouldn't have been talking.
I agree with tbm. If you look at the video carefully you'll see that the rider took a swing to the back of the older guys head before the camera turns the corner (0:16)
After that the rider swings at the older guys knees, then gut, then the head again. Then the head twice more (0:25) to get him crouched and a quick up, down up, with the ulock across the older guys head.
That bike rider got that many hits in and didn't knock the other guy down. The older guy doesn't even stumble or wobble after! He just does a quick jog away and holds his face.
This is the kind of disgusting behavior that only happens when some aggressive macho prick has an overwhelming advantage over someone else.

Yea 4 guys ... I'd use the lock... I had mine out when the dude punched me... but I was told by OPD after the fact that if i would have hit him I could have also been arrested for assult with a deadly weapon...
it sucks, but i bet that guy will think twice before starting shit next time with a biker.. although hitting him so many times was pretty excessive. we didnt see what happened before all this. maybe the cyclist had a previous incident like this happen before and got his ass kicked. who knows. i know id be on edge riding in the city like that dealing with asshole cab drivers and jaywalking aggro pedestrians too...there's definately been times i've wished i carried a u-lock..
this is the description.
made a pit stop in a starbucks somewhere on the lower east side and i saw this guy who appeared to be a bike messenger (maybe not) and an older asian guy (for sure he was an older asian guy) getting into a fight because they ran into each other at the intersection. They pushed each other back and forth for 2 minutes with no results (other than the older guy throwing the biker's sunglasses under a cab) and the older guy could have walked away but WOULDN'T LEAVE THE BIKE DUDE ALONE, the bike guy even said 'stop following me man', then the bike dude totally let him have it, POW! KRYPTONITE LOCK TO THE FACE LIKE 3 OR 4 TIMES! Dude's face was actually bleeding hard core for like the next 10 minutes, but i had to bounce soon after. People from inside the starbucks did come to his aid, but it all happened pretty fast.
Crazy, and oddly enough, the very next day i saw another fight in the street between two women and titties were flyin in that one, high heels bangin on car windows... unfortunately i did not have the camera, bummer. Enjoy.

obviously the dude on his bike felt threatened and warned the guy before doing anything drastic.
you dont know what happened before the camera started rolling. the biker keeps saying "are you serious dude?" the biker kept trying to walk away. the ped kept following.
clearly something pissed the biker off. the ped kept coming at him, so he deserved to be clocked. the biker is just a little guy. he didnt hit the ped that hard.
i wouldnt have hit the guy with the u-lock but some shoving is in order. that guy needs to get the fuck away from the biker and let it be. but he didnt, so he got clocked. simple as that. its NYC, isnt it?
