Volume News

I got en email from Volume today with an update on the new fork, the 3rd generation Cutter, 27.2 pivotal seatposts, and the Krull spider. All items are due to ship to your local bike shop in a week or so.

The "Fu Manchu" forks (new name, apparently no one liked "Bundchen Legs") are on their way and will be available in both 1" and 1 1/8". The fork will retail at about $165.

3rd Generation Cutters will feature a few improvements/changes based on feedback regarding the 2nd generation. Raised logo on the head tube, longer track ends (dropouts), and pinched chain stays for more tire clearance (they say 28c+).

Volume is the first company that I know of making a pivotal seatpost in 27.2. They'll be available in black, white, and polished and retail at about $22.

The brand new "Krull" Spider will retail at about $65. The jury is still out on whether or not the splined bmx spindle crank set ups hold up to fixed gear abuse over time. I know that there are a few riders out there using similar drivetrains but, I've read about some problems they've encountered.

Overall, it's good to see companies that have the means to do intelligent R&D are doing it and creating stronger components where need be.

*Cutter owners: If you don't already know, Volume is taking photo submissions for a contest in which the winner will recieve a new "Fu Manchu" fork. Deadline 5/31.

i feel bad for the kids just getting into fixed riding that dont know much about the bikes and where the technology is. 27.2 pivotal posts have been available for over four years by the company that invented the pivotal design, macneil.- a bmx company. and has been available for over a year through a company called alien nation- a bmx company.
also, a "bmx splined crank" is hands down stronger than any shit crank that most fixed kids ride. how would anyone even think that some random forged aluminum crank arm bolted to a 10mm square tapered bottom bracket would ever be stronger than a heat treated 4130 chromoly 48 spline crank arm on a heat treated 48 spline 4130 chromoly 19mm spindle??? if you want to mention a few riders that have had problems with a "bmx spline crank" mention all of the numb skull fixed wannabe riders out there riding fucking cotter pin cranks or square taper bb's and having them snap/strip out/ or break.... check out profileracing.com - another bmx company. im sure you all know them because their new fixed hubs are very sought after but what you probably didnt know is that profile has been making "bmx splined cranks" for thirty years and are the best cranks for bmx, mtb, fixed, whatever you ride without a doubt.

With that being said, Volume is a bmx company, they have been making bmx products since 1999-2000. a company making bmx products for almost ten years. one of my favorite bikes i had back in the day was a volume dinosaur. Volume has the means to do r&d because they just took bmx technology and put it into a road bike.

If you want to support a real bmx company call fbm or look at fbmbmx.com they make a fixed frame/fork much better than this taiwan volume stuff. all of the fbm shit is made in house in new york. i mean if you guys are all going to bite bmx's style and make fun of bmx you may as well ride a good well made bike.. or even wait for subrosa-once again, another bmx company for their amazing complete bike dropping mid summer, it is sure to be a staple with fixie kids as being an actually well built complete fixed bike with no corners cut like most fixed companies out there.

it is crazy that bmx companies are dominating and making quality products for this popular style of riding that is just now becoming main stream. i dont appreciate the fact that all of this criticism is coming from fixed kids about bmx when fixed kids are doing bmx tricks on bmx parts. i dont have a problem with anyone but i am a little irritated that most fixed gear dudes are tough guys that want to start fights and think that they are superior people(or how their attitudes seem) when i have been riding bmx street in downtown orlando for six or seven years.....

After all of that, i dont want to sound like a dick or an asshole but if you are going to run a bike shop and make money off of people that dont necessarily know what they want at least know what you are talking about. just do some research before you tell your customer base that something is a certain way if you dont even know... that is just constructive criticism. please dont take all of this the wrong way

too long, didn't read. If there's a point, it's lost in all the bitching.

Honestly, what the fuck are you going on about?

Have we ever slammed a BMX company on this blog? Have we ever slammed BMX as a sport or the people who ride? That answer is unequivocally no. It's fucking asinine of you to even imply such a thing, especially when you take in to account how many of us that do ride fixed here in Orlando (myself included) come from a BMX background. Not to mention certain people who write for this blog (Metha), are friends with Ronnie over @ Shadow / Subrosa. Many of us consistently support that company so what do you base this bullshit on? As for the other nit picky shit you're going off on Blackshaw about, I'll let him reply personally. I'm not about to do what you did and put words in his mouth...

FYI, I ride a volume Cutter and while I have had some issues with it (mostly with the rear drop outs) overall my experience with the frame fork has been a good one. Ask anyone who knows me, I have been a supporter of BMX companies developing products for these types of bikes for a few years now and I continue to purchase BMX parts that I find useful for my bike (for instance, I love my Shadow Conspiracy interlock chain, best shit ever). I'm honestly still confused regarding your accusations of "hating on BMX" and quite honestly, my perception of this entire post is that you're trying to start shit for no real reason. Seriously, you come off like a drama queen and a coward when you post anonymously but I digress. Let me end by asking you a simple question; why are you trying to create a rift when none exists?

If you ever "man up" and want to actually discuss this issue, hit me up. You would be surprised how off the mark you are with your little diatribe...

it wasnt directed to anyone in particular, and i wasnt saying that the people specifically on this site bag on bmx i just get that vibe from most fixed dudes that i encounter.
and like i said, it was my personal opinion and said to use it as constructive criticism not to take it the wrong way. you obviously decided to get mad about it. i did post anonymously because a good portion of the fixed kids in orlando, or kids that i have seen riding fixed downtown are the type of kids that like to fight at the drop of a hat, i was putting my two cents in and that is what i can do.

i am interested in talking about it though, i wasnt trying to start anything, just trying to put a fresh point of view in. i felt as if i posted under a name i would be singled out. im not starting drama, just pointing out the fact that i get weird looks for doing something similar. there should be some kind of unity between fixie kids and bmx kids. maby set up some kind of event or something

Basic axiom of life: don't run your mouth and you won't get clocked. Don't get me wrong, I'm not threatening you. I just want to point out the fundamental flaw to your approach...

There is a huge difference between having an open dialog on a fixed gear blog about the perceived misinformation you see as opposed to coming on said blog and making blanket statements about everyone who rides fixed. In the first scenario, people might try to engage you in discourse and perhaps a middle ground can be reached. Who knows, people might learn a few things and we all come out smarter in the end. In the second scenario, people get pissed and just focus on the negative aspects of your post. The next thing you know, someone finds out who you are and you're left with a black eye because some alpha male with a vigilante complex decided it would be funny to sucker punch you at the bar. Remember, the interweb is not as anonymous as people think it is...

Again, don't take this the wrong way but putting words in peoples mouths and making blanket statements tends to create a negative situation. If you really want to offer constructive criticism, try avoiding that. Again, I welcome you to chat with me if you ever see me out. I'm probably one of the most approachable people in this city. Plus I can keep a secret if you don't want your identity getting out... :)

to be completely honest i didnt feel like i put words into anybodys mouth, it definitely wansnt my intention. And, according to your post, you are aware that a lot of people(that i see) involved in the fixed community seem to be quick to throw a punch. i felt i had to post anonymously to protect my well being while trying to voice a personal opinion. I am a very open minded person, i on the other hand read something and say something to myself in my head and decide to push the comment button. given, what i said may have come across as harsh or cocksuckerish i did give warning that it wasnt directed at anyone and i was not trying to start shit. i tried to make it clear that it was a personal opinion and that it was to be used as constructive criticism.

Also, after reading my first post i do feel a little bad because it made me look like i was singling out blackshaw, which was also not my intention weather it seemed that way or not. sometimes translation between the mind and the hand becomes a bit cluttered.

I find it comical that you would make us out to be such brutes. Usually it's quite the opposite... :)

Regardless, it's all good. Just do me a favor and come up with a nom'de guerre or handle so that way I know who I'm talking to. Something much more clever than cptkrinkledick-umm-krunch...

well it seems as if you found me. i still would like to remain anonymous on this particular topic... but plan to comment very often in support of things in stead of being negative? if that makes sense, i have been hanging out with some old friends lately and didnt realize that i know most of the guys that hold this site down, maby not really well but have met almost everyone. a couple of guys i have talked to numerous times or have partied with them.

hey dude, ever heard of evolving? thats awesome you've been riding BMX for 6 or more years..big ups and I will be the first to commend you. I ride fix, but i don't wear tight pants, nor do I punch people in the face for no said reason. you shouldn't assume things! because we all know what happens when you assume!....right? as far as looks you get from other riders could be a "complex" you have. just sayin! you know if you really want to discuss things such as this maybe visit ibikeotown.com that would probably be a platform for you to have your tangents on fixed riders and life!....just sayin!

keep your chin up! the sunshine is out, go get some fresh air :)

Anonymous,
Nothing like a little cyber detective work to get to the bottom of things. I told you the interweb is not as private as you think it is. Feel free to post though as I appreciate differing points of view. After rereading your initial post, I sort of understand where you are coming from. Just try to keep the negativity down...

BTW, do me a favor and tell your boy to stop trolling the comments here. I know who he is as well and have visited both of his blogs. If he continues to be a prick, I'll make sure his name is well recognized by all the "fixie fags" here in town...

This whole thing blows my mind because: a)Blackshaw basically paraphrased the information on the volume site b)just about every fixed gear rider i know also loves BMX and c)if there are any "tough" guy, ready to fight fixed gear riders, i have yet to meet them (except for gus, he throws down!)
Anonymous, do what Danny said and take this jazz to the ibot forum. It's a much more productive means to discuss different view points.People come to the 407 blog to geek out not argue.
