A lot has been said about H+Son rims on the interweb, both good and bad. While some of the negative comments could be dismissed as plain ol' hater speak, valid concerns have been raised about the claims of durability regarding these rims. Ran across this story on Prollys blog and I had to share as many of us are considering getting these rims. Please keep in mind before you accuse me of "hatercide" that I'm not slamming on H+Son but rather passing on information that could be vital regarding this product. I've personally have never seen anything like this happen and for all we know, this is just an isolated incident. But in light of what happened, I feel it should be posted as it does warrant further scrutiny...

Props to Prolly for putting this info out there in an objective manner...

Kudos and a big pat on the back goes out to Nick, Kim and the army of volunteers that helped out!

Hummer 1, Julius 0...

P1060411

I just got home from the emergency room. Julius is still there, but for the most part i think he is doing OK. A few cuts and swollen parts. They are going to run some test to see if everything is good. It could have been a lot worst. I thought the car behind the hummer was going to run him over. The bike as you can see is not OK. I'm not going to get into the details of what happen. It is Julius's accident I will let him fill you in on the details and if it is cool with him I will share what I witnessed. For now let us wish him luck.

i'm sure Mel will have better pictures up later.

Looks like he's going to be fine, a broken wrist and shoulder blade [edit: scapula to be excact]. He should be getting out of the hospital in the next hour or so...

Be careful out there folks!

update 11.23.08 1:30 pm by tbm
Looks like they are going to keep him overnight for observation; he may have also bruised his lung in the accident. They also want to do a cat scan just to make sure there where no head injuries. I've spoken to him over text and he seems to be in good spirits, he's just really sore. He also really appreciates all the well wishes from everyone. I'll keep ya all posted...

update 11.24.08 11:15 am by tbm
Just received a text from Melissa, they are releasing him from the hospital. No head or internal injuries, just the broken bones. They really appreciate all the support and well wishes from everyone during the course of the day. Good to see us all come together like this.

Guys Who Cut their Own Hair

I know these are posted on some of the major blogs...

But I'm really feeling this project so I had to share!

Marisa Abaza is a Brooklyn based photographer that has started taking pictures of New York City cyclist and then having them write a small story about themselves and/or their bikes. The handwritten story is then placed on a small piece of paper next to the photo she takes. The results are brilliant IMO!

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this project as it continues to develop. The preliminary pictures she's posted look great and the handwritten notes next to them add immensely to the pictures she takes. I believe she is still looking for cyclists to be involved so if you're in the NYC area, contact her through her Flickr account.

Been chatting with a the different shop owners around town and all relay the same message; bike theft has shot up the last year in a huge way. Better yet, is that some of these thieving bastards think they can turn around and sell their ill gotten loot at said ship. Fucking losers...

Jax Event

So Matt from Burro Bags (which Ace.Metric will be carrying) emailed me about an art show/raffle/polo/fund raiser happening on December 13th. Read more about it on their site.

Be sure to check it out if you find yourself too far north to make it to Orlando Bike Weekend II

UPDATE:
The event has been pushed back a week!
December 20th is the new date.

So it looks like he struck again...

(image leeched off of superstock)

Little Billy (an alias for Orlando's notorious juvenile bike thief), has apparently struck again; this time hitting Retro City Cycle. According to Nick, he nabbed a couple of frames that where eventually returned. It appears this guys got some major cojones as the list of peoples bikes he has jacked is now reaching double digits...

Lock your bikes up people! While he may be the most notorious, he's not the only one jacking bikes these days...

New Volume fork coming out...

Found this little nugget on Trick Track.

For those of you like myself who where bummed about the non 700cc bar spinnage on the smaller Cutter Frames, they are now in the process of making this fork to remedy the situation. It's a BMX style fork which currently has a 3/8 axle but they are looking in to the possibility of making them 9mm instead in order to accommodate track wheel sets. Ronny from Volume mentioned the fork will be guaranteed for life much like the Cutter frame (current forks shipping with that frame set are not) and can be picked up separately once they are available. Get the full scoop here...

BTW, did I mention what a bad ass forum Trick Track is... :)

Election Day Ride Update

The final verdict on the Election Day Bike Ride.

From Concept to Execution we think we have finally nailed this down. As news kept rolling in about early voting and forecasts of long lines and glitches with polling places we felt that a bike ride gathering at 5PM could potentially inhibit people from voting. Basically we hated to think that by the time you got to your polling place you might be stuck in a 2 or 3 hour long line. Since most people can only vote after 5PM on Nov 4th, they will be rushing from work and fueling long lines. So we are encouraging people to keep voting early. That, and the fact that there were literally 25 polling stations just inside the small radius selected for the bike ride- to try and split everyone up in groups and route them separately would have made for a big fat mess. So we have decided on a very simple solution. The ride will still be happening and the spirit of the event remains intact.

We are encouraging everyone to continue to vote early, and whenever it is convenient for you to get it done on or before the 4th. A ride is scheduled for 5PM on Nov 4th and it is basically a kind of We voted, and feel good about it kind of thing. Everyone is going to meet at Constitution Green on Summerlin Ave. and South St., and ride from there on a route that will take you around most of the downtown polling stations. A tour of the playing field if you will. If you have to work on the 4th, and were planning to vote after 5PM, then still show up, and by all means hang out and then leave from the meeting place to go to your respective polling station-- and when you're all done exercising your right to vote, come and join the ride, we will be ending the ride and celebrating at Stardust Coffee.

Any Questions?

* Anyone can ride that has voted, is planning to vote, or wanted to vote but couldn't because you are a criminal :)
* This is not candidate specific! I repeat there is no party affiliation here. This is just a "we got our asses out and voted this election ride" the message is that you all showed up this year.
* This is not a race, it is a ride, anyone with a bike is welcome to ride.

YABAI BICYCLE CLUB proudly present:
DAS YUPPIE SCUM SHOPPING SPREE
- to be held November 28 // REGISTRATION: 2300HRS // RACE: 0000HRS

From Ibot:
"DAS YUPPIE SCUM SHOPPING SPREE is an alleycat race to coincide with Black Friday or as anti-consumerism activists have re-named, Buy Nothing Day. This is the day after Thanksgiving, and is the "biggest shopping day of the year." People show up in droves, sometimes camping out to be the first in line when their feudal big box opens up for business for their early bird specials, later to gift their gotten merchandise for a yuletide celebration of their choice. It's a tradition of excess, crass consumerism, and materialism that a growing number of activists, culture jammers and the like have taken resistance to to redub the "holiday"-of-fortune Buy Nothing Day."

Big thanks to all who came out Saturday night!

The 407fixedgear.com crew appreciates all the support you have given us in the past year and we where glad you came out and enjoyed our small token of appreciation Saturday night. Even though the bike games / trick session was minimal (seemed like everyone opted to kill the keg and just socialize instead of getting gnarly) the atmosphere was thick thanks to all those that came out. A special shout out goes out to Corey and Pete who made the drive out to hang with us. Pete in particular had some serious issues flying in from Toronto and we all appreciate him making the time to chill with us that night...

A couple of more shout outs:
  • Troy, Chris, Jimi and all the countless others who put in some serious work getting Ace Metric up to where it is now. Had you seen the place when blackshaw first got it, you would realize how much work was accomplished in a short amount of time.
  • Patrick & Johnny Five Mikes for dj'ing the party. You guys held it down proper all night.
  • Rapevan, JJ and Anthony for trying to get some sprints / footdown going.
  • Brian Badluck for supplying the Footdown champion belt. Shit was official looking!
  • Noonan for just being Noonan. Fuck you and your chocolate cake s0n!
  • and of course, all those who made it out and helped us kill the keg with a quickness.

Thanks once again for all the support this past year. This blog was started with the main intent of acting as a hub of communication to spread the word to all those that had a similar passion. Whether you ride a cheap conversion or you're a Keirin / NJS freak, we all ride for the love of it. This past year has seen our little scene grow by leaps and bounds and this next year promises to be another good one with your continued support!

oh and btw...

good times, good times...

Huge turn out for CM yesterday and it seemed like everyone dressed up for the event. I know Melissa got some great pictures of all the original and fun costumes at the after party. One of the things that really surprised me was all the honks of support we received from some motorists as we rode through the downtown area. Maybe motorists are getting used to the monthly procession? As usual, if you have pictures from last nights ride, hit us up...

..and the beat don't stop! Ace Metric / 407fixedgear.com party tonight. Based on all the feedback I was getting last night, this one is going to get live up in this piece!
