Critical Mass 8-29-08

(pic by bulius)

Meet up is at the same time, same place (5:00pm Loch Haven Park), Mass leaves at 5:30pm. Word on the street is that the end point is going to be at Studio 808. I hear some bands will be playing and some brew a flowing for the post ride shenanigans...

Also, according to info posted on the Chain Gang UCF film professor Lisa Mills and her crew will be scouting the ride in preparation of a planned film shoot of CM next month. From what I read it's for a documentary she is filming but check out the post for the full info...

Lets make this one of the biggest to hit Orlando!

A tribute to John Carpenter by Simon Gesrel and Xavier Ehretsmann set to the music of Zombie Zombie. Not only did they recreate one of my favorite movies via stop motion animation but they used GI Joe's as the principle actors...

photographer spotlight...

So I keep coming across some sweet photos on Flickr and as a result, I've decided to start a some what semi regular feature spotlighting different photographers on the local, national and international level. It's not anything that will be on a weekly basis or anything but rather just a spotlight on a photographers work I happen to like...

So lets start it off with Kyle Johnson aka kjten22. Some of you will no doubt recognize his work from Fast Fridays not to mention its been featured on tons of blogs like Trackosaurus. The links point to his Bikes photo set but make sure you also check out some of the work contained in the modeling and music photo sets as well...

Check him out!

Pensacola Cra-Cra-Crazy Eights

Orlando, Tallahasse, Gainesville, and New Orleans joined Pensacola last weekend for 3 days of bicycle mayhem.

Friday night (8-8-08...get it?) was the race. It started at 10pm. I can't say much about the race, because "diarrea really had a hold on me." I have never had to pull over so much in my entire life. We showed up just as the race was ending at this weird frat boy pizza place downtown. I was so mad that an uncontrollable bodily function had cost my entire posse to miss the race.
WINNERS: 1st (mini Fortune), 2nd (little Butts) and 3rd (Woozy/Brooks/Chuck)

After the race, the whole crew headed to Sluggos (god bless it) to have a little post-race fun. We played foot-down. Now I don't know what was going on, but people were ripping around so fast, it was like foot down with turbo jets, which means you fall a lot harder. A man who looked like Rod Stewart on a tall bike won.

A group of guys from New Orleans had brought their sprint machines to have a tournament at Sluggos on Saturday night. The rollers were hooked up to a laptop that projected the two competitors progress with red and blue bars on a big screen behind them. So the crowd could go wild as they watched the bars shoot out from each other, while the sprinters couldn't see who was winning. The tournament lasted for about 3 hours. Which meant that a lot of people were a little "3 sheets" by the time they got called up to sprint. Willie from New Orleans won overall for sprints. And our very own Birdie Bird tried to whoop this greasy drunk shirtless man in overalls with one strap off.

Later on, Big Pete beat Sweaty Overalls (or should I say, "Famous Sal's")

Sunday was the most beautiful day in a long, long time. We played polo at the beach for about 5 hours. There were 6 teams. Round robin with a semi final and a final game. My team was named Dirty Sanchez, after the grease smudge I unknowingly wore on my mustache for a hot minute. The hockey rink was smooth as a baby's and Pensacola knows their polo. Team Board Shorts won the championship (real funny name guys, i hate boardshorts). This is a piece of evidence of AB taking out Tony:

The Crazy Eights weekend ended with a very rowdy show at Sluggos.
Best Friends Forever, Jenny K.(represent), and Bone Weather.

i love overtime...

cause next friday i will be rich! also because of that i am way behind... earlier this week i got an e-mail about jared (the original white rapper aka i apologize if i spelled your name wrong) winn's farewell. as many of you know he will be leaving the 407 for greener pastures somewhere out in the middle of the desert.

anyway, the guys at retro are sending him off (and firing him) tomorrow around 5:30 with some beers and other libations. come one, come all, drink a beer and celebrate his curly hair.

-overworked and overtired, hugs..

minimal!

from gizmodo:

Designer Bradford Waugh came up with Nulla (meaning "nothing") as a way of making bikes more stylish and lightweight. And visually stunning of course. Lacking spokes, it uses a direct-gear-chain drive system, which leaves the bike looking like a simple set of open curves. Whether or not it would ride well would be immaterial, methinks: rock up to a cycling meet on this thing and you'd have an instant bunch of admirers. Just a concept... but who knows, it looks exactly sort of thing we're riding in twenty years time.

well i dig it.

feelin h(y)r

Ryan Williams and crew at h(y)r mag had a nice little feature on MASH in the last issue. they're perpetuating the bicycle theme in the latest issue with a feature on the macaframa crew and upcoming video (just the teasers are by far the cleanest footage and editing i've seen in any track bike film). I can't wait for the mac film to drop (late september?) so, the h(y)r feature on macaframa will hold me over til then. link to the h(y)r site and click features.

Tuesday nights we be hustlin' hustlin hustlin'.....

Great ride last night people! Everybody pushed it and a few even beat the train across the tracks. Gotta say though, that stretch on Orange by Ravenous Pig (the area with all the construction) is getting just a tad bit hairy with all the traffic and obstacles...

Keep it locked, weekly sprints getting organized. Peep the ibot thread and put in your two cents on a locale...

zero.

i'm back.

let's roll.

Going back to Cali Cali Cali....

Going back to Cali. Naw, I don't think so...

Sorry for the lack of activity, been in L.A. for the past 5 days and just got back. Jet lag worked me when I first got there and just when I finally got used to the time difference, I flew back on a red eye. So yeah, my brain is a bit fried right now as it feels like it's noon to me at the moment...

So to get things back on track while my body readjusts to the humidity and my brain to the time difference, here's a few vids to get you going...

Sprint Night from Panda Face on Vimeo.

Would love to get something like this going here. Anthony and the Pista crew where doing something similar at Howard but I dunno if they still meet up for sprints. Holla and let us know in the comments...

Night time alley cat bizness....

And just to keep things local, here's the Orlando Sentinels very own Chain Gang (damn they look gangsta in that picture) blogging about the Seattle Critical Mass fiasco and the NY Cop / CM ruckus. For those of you reading from other parts of the state, the Sentinel is the newly dumbed down daily newspaper that passes off as journalism in this town. From what I hear it didn't always used to be like that but Sam Zell feels the readers of the rag prefer stories about puppy dogs as opposed to those with actual substance to them. Anyways, make sure you take the time to read the obligatory "it's all the CM /fixed gear riders fault" comments as they are as mind numbing as you would expect. Because we all know motorists follow the letter of the law every time they get behind the wheel of their car and it's really just us who are the scofflaws in this town. Just ask Jeremy...
