Courtesy of squirrelly ol' sleezy K! The pics are hosted on myspace so you're going to have to login....

I have some that I took of the checkpoint I was working, I will post them up soon. If anyone else has any pictures they want to share, hit me up and I'll add them to the mix...

YABAI SCAVENGER RAT wrap up...

A couple of days late with this but but better late than never...

Overall a very cool concept for a race because speed was not the main criteria here. while there where checkpoints racers had to hit, the over all emphasis was on finding items listed on the manifest and either bringing them in to the finish line or taking a picture of them. Just to give you an idea of what these items could be:
  • Rebar
  • lawn chair
  • traffic cone
  • a picture of a hummer
  • a picture of a defaced hummer
  • a picture of a confederate flag
  • a picture of a defaced confederate flag
  • a picture of a guy with a beard

and these are just the items I can remember. There's pictures of both a defaced hummer and flag. I wont go in to who did what but lets just say peeps got in to the spirit of the race... ;)

I didn't race because I ended up volunteering to run a check point at the last minute. Ryan needed some help so I gladly offered to help him out. Julius and Melissa hung out with me @ my checkpoint for the majority of the race. In addition to the scavenger hunt, there where also tasks the racers had to perform at the checkpoints. By far the most hated one seemed to be the dry baked potato checkpoint. As you can imagine, you had to wolf one down in this lovely weather (the heat index was 100 degrees that day) while dealing with the cotton mouth everyone had. Made the fortune cookie checkpoint @ Rat Race 2 seem delightful by comparison. Other tasks included navigating a maze and in my particular spot, they had to met me at the Bank of America Drive thru, leave their bikes with me, walk in to the Fashion Square Mall via the Macy's entrance and find the Bearded Train Conductor in the mall. The stream of sweaty racers (some just wearing underwear) I'm sure made for a scene to the Sunday mall crowd and from what I heard, Macy's security guards where starting to follow peeps as they ran through the store. I'm sure they where undoubtedly confused regarding what the hell was going on...

Most people paired up in teams which made the cooperative nature of the race something not generally found in most alley cat races. Racers received points based on the items and pictures they produced. The winners of the race where Andrea and Mark, with the team of Mikey, Anthony & Jeremy placing second and then Team Kitty Wolf coming in third (or do I have second and third confused?). Either way, everyone seemed to have a blast. Yabai had quite the prize selection and pretty much everyone walked away with something. There was supposed to be a game of bike polo but I believe that ish got rained out during the deluge that hit that night...

All in all a wickedly good time! Hope to see Yabai do some more events like this in the future. BTW, you can read Ryans account of the weekend here.

King of Evil Race Recap...

Brought to you by 407fixedgear roving reporter Julius...

-------------------------------------------------------->

The race was nuts. Nearly 26 miles from downtown St Pete (behind State Theater), to southside St. Pete, across to the beach, up to Treasure Island, than back over to Emerald Bar downtown. Before the race, we had a mini Bike Polo Tourney. Orlando one the first round against a St Pete/Tampa/Sarasota Team, but we lost a best out of three against St. Pete. The tournament was fairly short, but it was a nice warm-up for a race, and only minimal bike fatalities. Plus, playing with a crowd is always fun. We then headed over to the starting line. No run to the bikes like usual alleycats (which I actually preferred), just a sprint to beat the oncoming traffic, complete with the cop car a block up who must have been wondering WTF is going on, then responding by doing nothing at all. The race was really nice with the night breeze with a nice stretch along the beach complete with drunk tourists. The checkpoints were just signatures (in proper FFGPS fashion), with the second to the last one being pretty tricky. The address was written on the manifest, but the directions were a bit misleading. There were bridges we had to pass going over and back from the bridge, but nothing too bad (thanks goodness).

Some highlights:
  • Apparently Eric and some other guys got into a scuffle that afternoon, I don't remember the full story, but U-lock justice was involved, the bad guy ended up in the back seat of a cop car, and Eric had a tampon up his nose after Bike Polo to stop the bleeding
  • A Rays game was the same night, followed by a performance of MC Hammer
  • Pete gave Kevin, Dallas, and I an intimate lesson in pre-race lubrication (... I'll leave it at that)
  • Riding with the Biking Viking the entire race (first out of town!), Kevin and I would like to think we helped out a lot with that
  • The No Bikes sign right before the Treasure Island causeway
  • Getting lost and luckily getting helped out with St Pete peeps on the third checkpoint, riding around in some neighborhood in the dark yelling "checkpoint!" is always fun
  • Riding the last leg with Carol and the St. Pete crew then hearing "oh shit, that's a girl" and watching her zoom past to defend her first girl position (Carol got first girl)
  • Jeremy for doing the right thing and giving up the first out of town prize (he missed a checkpoint ... he gave up a new wheelset!)
  • Being second to last to Pete in Foot Down (come on, what do you seriously expect would happen?)

There's plenty of other things, but these are the only I can remember right now. Also, thanks for pushing it back so us out of towners didn't miss any of the action. And thanks to Corey for running the a great race. Lastly, this is only slightly bike related, but I have a sweet tan line across my forehead from wearing my bike helmet.

This is going to be an amazing weekend full of shredder shows and radical people. Come one come all!

View from the bar @ Zachs shindig...

Can't remember the name of the band to save my life though. Someone help me out... [edit] Noonan just reminded me, its Khann[edit]

Turn out was so so because of the rain but those that did show up had a blast. I dunno if they had the race, they were supposed to run it later because the rain washed out the original start time. I left @ midnight and the roads where still soaking wet so I dunno if it even went down. All in all I had a great time; free beer, good music and a rowdy crowd. That's how furoche gets down! :)

Product Review: Hip pack by RyanFromDeland

How's this for a review, the shit works, it's functional and it don't make my ass look fat.... Good job Ryan cause the later is hard to do... :)

Seriously though, an awesome product handmade here in the 407. I went with the basic black canvas with grey trim all made with recycled / reclaimed materials. I've been putting it through the paces for the past 2 weeks and its held up like a champ with no major issues / flaws found. The pack has just enough room to carry my stuff without making it to heavy; the basics like a tube, wrench, CO2 pump, bike tool, keys and a Kyles Bike Shop beer coozy with room left to spare (even for a mooncup jenny). He even sorted me out with a custom phone pocket with strap to keep it from moving around. He makes these things custom to the individual ordering and can come in a variety of materials / trim finishes along with different configurations for the belt etc.

Check out the pictures and see for yourself (clicking on them takes you to a bigger pic). If your interested in having Ryan make you one, his contact info is ryanfromdeland@hotmail.com.

RAt Race 2: Heads n Apples

Falon took these pictures from the Orlando Rat Race 2 that took place on saturday. The checkpoint at Al Chemy's hair salon had people bobbing for heads or apples. The pics are damn sexy. It must be all the bobbing......

It was a great race. I got a flat at the very last checkpoint, about to head to the finish line, which deflated my heart. I started walking back to Beta, and about a mile down the road I got a dink from a new friend to the finish. I need to stop jumping curbs in races. But on a good note, the girls that rode this race gave me a run for my "Orlando First Girl" title. All I have to say about that is THANK YOU LADIES!
This race was way fun and major props to Age and Metha!

Second Annual Orlando Rat Race Results

Thanks sooo much for everyone who came out and participated. I’m sorry the results have taken so long to post up, but since they have taken so long I guess you all won’t mind if I ramble on for a bit.
The weather really held out for us. I remember on Monday and Tuesday all the weather reports said that it was suppose to rain all weekend. But low and behold the magic of Disney made it happen. On top of that, I thought for sure it was a bad omen that Katie’s friend (I’m sorry I do not know your name) got into that accident right in front of registration. She was suppose to be running the slip and slide check point. So then we thought we were going to have to cancel that point; however, thanks to Garrett, Allie, and Steve we were able to keep it going. I hope Katie’s friend is ok. That ankle looked pretty floppy though. Let us know if you need anything.
I apologize for some of the weaker checkpoints. The rolling down the hill one was actually suppose to be a three legged race and the throw the rock in the water one was suppose to be skipping rocks (my favorite activity) and picking up some litter just to help clean up my rock skipping spot. The funny thing about the rock check point was that when someone got to that point they were so tired that they just picked up a rock and threw it without even looking. They ended up hitting some Asian dude in a boat, right in the head! (BTW please share your funny or horrible stories with us.)
I can’t thank all of you enough . There is a lot of shit going on in my life right now and all of you in the cycling community and all of these events and all of this fun makes everything worth it. So cheesy I know, but this is certainly coming from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, again. And finally here it is.

(I want to congratulate the top 20 for fore filling your wildest and wettest dreams of beating Pete Young. However, don’t get too excited. He had two flats and had to beg for the second tube. Pete was actually passed by many racers who refused to give up there tubes. Where’s the love? I was even told by the people running the check point that he asked to take their bikes (beach cruiser or whatever) to continue the race. None of the peeps running the check point had bikes, so they offered to drive him to the closest bike shop to get a tube. However, the brave and valiant Pete refused for fear that he would be disqualified. Finally a very nice person was willing to give up a tube for a beer. Hey champ, how about next time you take a buddy’s advise and save yourself some grief:-)

Rat Race 2 recap...

(blackshaw getting jiggy with it! click the image to check out the photoset)

I'm gonna keep this short but sweet. Killer route, awesome checkpoints, gorgeous day (albeit a tad bit windy at times) equaled out to one massive race. Couldn't of asked for a better time. Overall this race ran extremely smooth, with all checkpoints being manned and the tasks not too taxing except for a few. The funnest check point IMO was the slip and slide on Belgrade and the Alchemy check point (on Edgewater). The worst ones IMO where the fortune cookie check point (a dry ass fortune cookie and no water, do the math) and the one at Mead Park (all that spinning really put a hurting on me). Some people feel the Greenwood Cemetery one was the worst of the bunch. While the spinning didn't mess me up as much as the Mead Park one, the itchiness that resulted from having to roll down that grassy hill stayed with everyone the remainder of the day...

Post race the usual trick shenanigans broke out @ the end point (Covert/Beta) with beer, vegan dogs and other assorted refreshments offered up. After the awards ceremony, a game of bike polo was fired up. It was a Tampa vs Orlando showdown and due to the lack of lights, the scene looked like something out of fight club with parked cars providing almost all of the lighting. I was kind of expecting a blow out because Tampa/St Pete has been doing the bike polo thing a bit longer but Orlando managed to give them a damn good fight. In the end, experience beat out heart but the 407 did manage to win one match in the best out of 5 series. This was the first time I ever saw a game of bike polo and I have to admit, I'm hooked... :)

Massive respect to all that came out and especially to Adrian and Metha for the huge amount of hard work they put in to this. Also, lots of appreciation to all the volunteers that helped work the check points. Some of you guys really made me laugh with how festive and enthusiastic you where in regards to working these things. Lastly, a big shout out to team GPS for not letting me fall back at the end. I'm suffering from a shitty summer cold and was dragging ass yesterday. Kev, Julius, Teddy and Joey stayed with me even though it was obvious I was slowing them down towards the end. Thanks to your motivation and loyalty, I was able to finish this race pretty damn strong...

Race results should be posted shortly so hang tight. BTW if you have your race photos sorted out, hit me up and I'll post them up.

a truly good friend of mine just launched the online shop for his new line of beautiful, handcrafted leather goods; mostly wallets. many of you may already know Jason Gregory or at least know of him. he's one of the first who encouraged me to build my first fixed wheel conversion (2 years ago) and one of my favorites to ride and hang with. i can't speak highly enough of Jason and that probably has something to do with why his products are so amazing.

has the fixed gear apocalypse arrived?

according to a few peeps I know it has and this is the 7th sign... Thoughts? I personally think it's a pretty nice bike albeit it's not for me. Oh and in case you don't get the BSNYC reference, here it is...

Also, I grabbed this off Tracko:

I like the idea, someone should organize something along these lines here. Click on the image or here to see some pictures from the race...

On a much lighter non bike related note, wtf is happening on the Jerry Springer show? I've been working from the home the past week and I had Jerry Springer on the tele while I was working this morning. If you can believe it, it's become even more of a fukin circus than it was before; complete with jugglers spinning plates and other objects while guests throw down over the soap opera shenanigans that make up their lives. There is even a guy with no body from the waist down that just walks on stage every so often just to freak people out (I'm not making this up). The scene is pretty damn surreal with elements of Vaudeville thrown in just for good measure. It was good for about 30 minutes before I fired up iTunes... :)
