We rolled about 8 deep and really turned this shit out! My hands where tingly and I had the whole runners high thing when we finally stopped. No average speed as no one really had a cornputer on their bike last night but if I had to guess conservatively it was about 18 mph. The route we took was basically the first part of the after easter race; with the start point being Stardust, weaving thru baldwin park then hitting lakemont, left @ aloma thru winter park down orange towards the hospital, right @ princeton, left at edgewater riding thru college park, left at lakeshore and then hitting the north end of orange ave with the end point being BBQ... Good fast ride for damn sure!

Best part of the night, hearing hugs story about jocking for position on Aloma with a car. Hugs came out of it with a bump on his hand but dudes mirror I heard took a beating! LOL

we'll be out next week for sure. we split at 8:30 from stardust....

Even when I tried, I still couldn't get DFL....

I was whored by jared I tells ya! WHORED!!!!

Fun race with interesting check points with my favorite ones being the first and second. We had to spin around around some poles and then chug a beer at the first one, which I drank instead (sorry, chugging is for frat boys). Something about that beer was refreshing as all fuck and it went down real smooth when combined with the cig I bummed off another racer (thanks to whoever that was). Gotta love a race that lets you drink and smoke @ the first checkpoint. From there we rolled over to the 2nd and that one just really set the tone for the rest of the ride. Paper rock scissors or a brownie? For the record, most of the DFL crew went for the brownie. all in s0n, all in! That said, that was the longest it has ever taken me to ride that distance. So much so we started getting annoyed at the end and ended up riding faster just to get it over with...

Overall I had a good time even though in my opinion that part of town just plain sucks. Urban sprawl has run amock out there and drivers are aggressive. I was amazed at how much UCF has grown in the last few years as we rode through the campus but even with the bike lanes, it still somewhat ruff to ride a bike out there. So much respect to those brave souls who do so every day. UCF cops are a joke (again, my opinion) and seemed to be sweating a lot of people for no real good reason. The funny thing is they tend to back off real quick if you know your rights. So a word to those who were complaining about the cops out there yesterday; know the rules of the road regarding bikes and traffic in addition to your basic civil rights. Some peeps try to blur the line in order to get you to comply for whatever reason. Be smart, be rational and most importantly, the more you understand the system you have to live in the better off you will be at not getting exploited by those who seek to do so. Now you know! And knowing is half the battle...

Fixed Fight 2 recap...

Casualty of War

One of the best races I've rode this year by far! Very well organized and the St Pete area itself is a very nice city to ride in. Even traffic wasn't bad and the one time I almost got hit was entirely my fault (more on that later). Killer vibe and as the pictures in the post will show, a great time was had by all that entered. I'm very happy I made it out for this one and helped rep the four-0-seven....

I had major issues getting out of town yesterday, so much so that I didn't leave the Orlando area until 1:40 or so. Knowing I was running mad late, I was hauling ass the entire way and I shit you not, I made it to Tampa in 55 minutes. It was once I hit Tampa that I hit some serious traffic that only got worse once I hit 275 South. Because of this, I did not make it out to the registration point until 3:10, missing the people working it and not being able to register for the race. I thought about driving back to Orlando but I figured "fuk it" and decided to ride around looking for people and if I didn't find anyone, at least I could say I rode around downtown St Pete for a hot minute. So I rode around for about 5 minutes and came across a few racers which seemed to be really lost. I followed them for a bit then ran across another group that seemed to know where they where going. After about 10 minutes of following them, I happen to run in to Pete Young, Shablack, Zach and Kyle (aka Team Furoche) hauling ass towards a check point. I followed them at this point and ended up riding the rest of the route. I hit a total of 4 of the 6 check points this way and got to ride about 80% of the route (based on my guestimate after looking at a manifest post race). What I did race I found to be a lot of fun and with out further delay, here's tbms highlight reel of yesterdays race:

- Making it to Ybor City from Orlando in 55 minutes. yeah s0n, the WRX was hauling ass yesterday! An M5 and I took turns leading and made wikked time to the Tampa area. Too bad 275 South pissed on my parade once I got there...

- Running across Pete Young and Team Furoche: as I mentioned earlier, I was looking for racers and figured if I found some, I would follow them around and do the course that way since I missed registration. Well the first initial racers I came across seemed rather lost and where not riding very fast as a result. It was by accident I came across these guys hauling ass up the street and figured these fools must be at the front of the pack. So I followed and haul ass we did! We proceeded to ride on a one way street the wrong way for what seemed like 5 or 6 miles. Lets just say that shit was hairy but oh so much fun. Followed them to my first checkpoint (which I believe was their third) cutting across traffic and parking lots as we made our way there.

- Check point volunteers: all of the checkpoint volunteers where super friendly yesterday and helped me stay on course once I told them what happened with me not registering. I had lost pete and team foruche when I had to stop for a potty break on one of the first checkpoints on the trail. As a result, the volunteers where really helpful letting me know where to go and where the race was ending. Not to mention there where people at every checkpoint we hit which was nice. Top notch all the way around!

- Riding on that Bike Trail: now the name of the trail escapes me but this was a nice twist on the race course as you could really haul ass on this stretch. There where a total of 2 check points on this trail I believe which offered a reprieve from the traffic. While playing in traffic is one of my favorite parts of any race, this really was something different and it was pretty cool overall.

- Riding with Corey and Julius for the last leg of the race: Once I got off the trail I started following Corey and he was gracious enough to let me follow him back to the end point. As a token of my appreciation, I let him draft off me for a while until he blew past me once he skitched a ride off a SUV. As we where making our way back we ran across Julius as well and all 3 of us made the final sprint back in to downtown St Pete. It was at this point where my ass almost got hit by a car and this time, it was completely my fault. As we approached an intersection, Julius yelled "on the right" which I did not hear. As I bombed through the intersection I hear brakes screeching and look to the right and see a big ass dodge durango coming at me. I just barely managed to get past it and waved at the driver trying to express my gratitude for not running me down like the dumb ass I was. I honestly thought he was gonna double back around and beat my ass but he drove on. Other than this incident, I had no major run in with drivers yesterday and I have to say St Pete drivers for the most part are pretty mindful of cyclists (from what I observed). Plus I didn't get anything thrown at me this time either which is always a plus... :)

- Finish line: the finish line was at the top of a parking garage in downtown St Pete. It wad a final sprint to the top of the garage at the end. There they had the awards ceremony as well as the foot down, trick and track stand contests. With the city skyline as a back drop, it made for a nice end to one bad ass race...

Track Stand Contest

and last but not least, photographic proof that Pete Young has to abide by the laws of gravity just like everyone else does... :)

As usual Tampa/St Pete raising the bar for races here in the state! Thanks to Todd and all the volunteers that helped organize this race. Also a big shout out to all the riders I met from across the state. I would list your names out but too much free PBR post race didn't help with retaining anyones names. It was nice to see all parts of the state repped to the fullest as the fixed scene continues to grow here. I hear there are some big things in store for Jax in the very near future so keep it locked for details.

..now off to get some caffeine and then I'm off to East Orlando for the Bike Co Op race! Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post tomorrow. If not, remember that it's 420 so I'm not really stressing shit today! :)

Sound off!

The don't have s#*t to do with bikes post....

Most of you are familiar with Dolla Lamas work here in Orlando. For those that are not, the man is a one hell of an artist and is prolific in terms of how much he gets his work out around town and the surrounding areas. He's known for working with wheat paste mostly but the guy has serious can control skills as well. Here's a time lapse of the mural he did at Covert a while back. Tip of the hat to Julius over at IBOT for the linkage!

Want to meet some ladies?

Well then you should go to the Girlie Girl ride. For girls, with girls. They will be meeting at Austins Coffee at 7:00pm on Wednesdays. I am not to sure of many other details but Janelle (Andy's girl from Black Bean Deli)told me to let everybody know about it. Sorry boys, the title was quite a teaser. But if you want to meet a bunch of cute cycling girls you can always just show up there and pretend like you didn't know about it!

boy: "Hey, you ride a bike too!"

girl: "Duh, what does it look like dip-shit!"

boy: "Wow, i had no idea that all you girls were riding tonight. Look i ride a fixed gear. It has no brakes. Yeah, i'm pretty tough."

girl: "..."

Porch Monkeys.......

Porch Monkeys

A shot of Casa de Curry during the You Love to Hate After Party. It wasn't planned at all and it just happened spontaneously; like the best ones always do. What you don't see is the large amount of people on the other porch as well... :)

Had a blast last night at the show and managed to get a serious swerve on while looking at some dope work. I heard a few people picked up a few of the pieces which makes me happy there are patrons that support the urban art scene here in town. Seriously, this town needs more events like this as it was a breathe of fresh air to the somewhat stale Saturday night ritual. Too bad the Po-niner came by and closed the party down. Something about needing a permit to host an event like this. (WTF? I guess for the alcohol?) I knew it was all over once the short cop (seriously, the guy was like 5 foot 2) parked his cruiser in the middle of the street, turned on his lights and strutted over to his partner as he spoke to Julio (owner of the building). His body language spoke volumes of what he was thinking. [steps on soapbox]Good job OPD for stomping on the neck of culture in this town. I feel a fuck load safer as a result.... [/steps off soapbox]

If you missed out, your bad! don't sleep on the next one! Andrew, thanks for letting us use your humble home to get primed before and of course the impromptu after party afterwards! You truly are the hosts of hosts!

PS Hugs, we miss you sucker... It just ain't the same with out you. You miss any more and you are officially a sell out! :)

PSS Kevin, eat a freakin' banana sometime... :) seriously though, get well!

Fixees on Real Radio?

On Saturday morning Andrew and I happen to stumble across a vintage British Car show @ Mead Gardens. We happened to be riding around town and decided to cut through Mead and low and behold, there where are these really nice vintage British roadsters. Pretty cool and unexpected so we stopped for a few to admire some of the machines. So as we where walking around gawking at these finely kept autos, one guy came up and asked Andrew if his bike was a "messenger" bike. After explaining what a fixed gear was he immediately asked how we managed to stop without a standard caliper brake. After explaining that, he mentioned that he had heard about fixees when he was listening to 104.1 and was curious as to how they worked and how we are able to stop. Curious that the subject of fixees was on Real Radio, I asked him what the context of the discussion was and he said that everyone seemed to have the same basic question; how do we stop when there are no brakes on the bike. About this time another guy came by and asked us a few more questions about our whips and mentioned he had just built a single speed for his daughter and that she eventually wanted to go fixed as well.. He also mentioned that a show on Real Radio was also talking about the subject. I asked him which show and he didn't remember as he is not an avid listener of the station and just happned to tune in. Now fast forward a few hours and now we're chatting with Michelle about our conversation @ Mead Gardens. She then mentions that a co-worker of hers had said the same thing and also said that they where talking about the race as well (I'm assuming that they where talking about the After Easter Race since it was the most recent one). According to Joelen, they where talking about it on the Philips Phile and once again, the main topic seemed to primarily revolve around how the hell we manage to stop these things without brakes.

So did anyone happen to catch any of this that afternoon? Supposedly it aired on the Monday afternoon after the race and from what I've been able to gather the topic started because someone mentioned something about seeing a lot of bike riders riding that day. I tried finding archives of the show but didn't have much success. I'm just kind of curious to see if anyone heard it and what the overall context of the conversation was. If you did catch it, chime in on the comments section...

Personally, I just think it's funny Andrew and I ended up fielding questions about our bikes at a vintage sports car show... :)

Helmet Head

I don't know how many of you know Dallas or have read about this yet, but he got into a pretty bad accident a few days ago. He doesn't remember the details but it is possible that his wheel just collapsed and he hit is temple, got a hemotoma (blood clot)in his brain and had to get surgery. He is doing good now and is out of the hospital after 4 days i think. You can read more on flfixed.com. Most of us have ridden with him before at a few races around Florida and here in our own town. Great guy sorry it had to happen to him. But let this be a(nother i.e. Gus) lesson for us.

super stoked!

The northbound bike lane that starts at Orange and Lucerne and continues north on Rosalind used to disappear into obscurity just past Lake Eola but, has finally been properly connected to where it used to restart on Rosalind/Magnolia just north of Robinson. Maybe because construction on the Vue is coming to a close, who knows but there's fresh paint on the asphalt in the form of a continuous lane through the aprx. 200 yard gap where it was kind of a lane shift cluster fuck.

Big fucking deal, you say?

I'm just super stoked because now my M-F ride from my apartment (near Orange and Lucern) to the Lynx station on Amelia is 100% bike lane. I know this is a special case because of the geography of my ride but, I didn't think it was at all possible in such a non cycling friendly town as Orlando.

i'm excited.

We made it on Trackosaurusrex!
