Gainesville Alley Cat, March 1st Apocaleap Year....

I spoke with a few people last night about this race and no one seemed to know what the 411 was on it. During the course of my internet travels today, I came across a post for it on the Florida Fixed Gear forum that gave some info on it. Instead of trying to paraphrase it and perhaps lose info in the process, I'm pasting the contents of the thread for those of you that are not members of that forum. (you should sign up though, there's usually some good stuff on there)

Hi everybody. I just found out about this board and the FL points deal... We're setting up a bike weekend called Apocaleap Year that will benefit The Kickstand and FNB. The Kickstand is Gville's new community bike shop (we're not technically open yet, just organizing, setting up, fun(d)raising, etc.). Check out the website http://www.thekickstand.org/ There should be some pictures of the amazingly-painted warehouse space up there soon.

There's going to be an alleycat as part of the weekend, along with tons of other stuff I'll list when it's all official. My question is: did you guys ever sort out a points system? Is Jacksonville part of it? If so, I'd definitely like this race to be part of it. Could we just have the points racers pay an extra dollar and contribute that much? It seems kind of steep to charge everybody, given that most of them won't even know there is a fl alleycat points competition.

I helped set up Bikes Camera Action almost 2 years ago, and it was great to see so many out-of-towners come, so this time we want to convince even more people to visit gville, hang out at the kickstand, race, and have fun.

News on the race:

The bike weekend is going to start Friday with critical mass and a show at the Wayward Council with some Minneapolis bands - Hangun Man, Webby Moore, and Jammy Dodgers. Then Saturday 12pm - 8pm there's acoustic music, bike-oriented workshops, a swap meet (bring yo shit! trade/buy/whatever), free bike repair, and other shenanigans. FNB will have food for donation before the race, 3-4pm, and after the race, 7-9pm. After registration at the Kickstand we're sending everyone there to hang out till the start. The race is going to be around 20 miles. Each checkpoint presents an opportunity to win raffle tickets. There's a playground challenge, graffiti contest (it's legal... 15 min. max), track time trial, and some other crazy stuff. People that are racing to win will be able to skip the longer activities but obviously won't win any raffle tickets at those checkpoints. Top 3 male and female will win a bunch of raffle tickets.

There's also two costume contests: most apocalyptic and best helmet. Winners receive raffle tickets, of course.

We're going to raffle all the prizes off at 9pm before the show at the Kickstand (we're not sure who's going to play yet). We've gotten around a grand in prizes with more on the way....

We don't have any plans for Sunday, yet, but there might be some things going on if there's interest. There's plenty of pads to crash at, so get a crew together, split gas, and get here!
