Interesting concept @ play in Berkley.. This goes far beyond creating a "bike lane" on token busy streets.
Thoughts?

A fucking boulevard!!!??? i'd give for a bike lane to and from work. I like the idea though. Part of the efficiency of cycling is ruined by the standard bike lane. Actually being a part of the traffic allows a decent cyclist to take advantage of being smaller and more agile. Also just like the guy in the video stated, the signs on the streets have to be LARGE. There are actually many signs through Florida that say to "Share the Road"; however, most people who never ride bikes never even notice these signs. And those are the people who are going to run over our asses! The size of those signs and where they are placed are the most important things. But like i said i would be happy with a simple bike lane.
I'm with you on the bike lane issue as I find it a necessary evil due to the overall attitude of drivers in this area. I personally like riding with traffic but if the use of bike lanes creates the awareness in drivers necessary for them to actually share the road with bikes, then so be it. Dunno if I subscribe to the whole Bike Blvd concept but I know of a few people I ride with that would love the idea. It's kind of intimidating riding on the roads around here and if a concept like this was implemented, I know those people would greatly appreciate it. How feasible it would be to implement around here is another topic entirely!
IMO, the biggest problem here is awareness of the traffic laws in conjunction with the mindset some drivers develop when in a vehicle. This aggressive almost narcissistic mentality is the real problem and when you couple it with ignorance of the traffic code, it can be a dangerous situation. I honestly feel that if many of these bad drivers actually rode for a bike for a week, their attitudes would change drastically. Who knows, perhaps I'm completely oversimplifying the issues here..
